"Harry and the VPI team are
to be cobgratulated. A good wet cleaning machine opens
up the latent power lurking in secondhand record shops,
as well as spring cleaning your existing collection."
- Reuben Parry, HiFi+
"I have found the HW 16.5
to be an outstanding performer. The record surfaces
are microscopically clean and are so prestine they look
new!" - Bert Whyte Audio Magazine
VPI's Scout turntable is set to follow in the illustrious
footsteps of the HW19, VPI's previous entry level turntable
which redefined the performance expectations at the
price.
When Harry Weisfeld set out to design a new entry level
turntable, he started with a clean sheet and felt that
the design work he'd done on the Aries 2 represented
a good starting point. A 28 mm thick piece of MDF is
bonded to a 12 gauge steel plate, making a damped chassis
unsing the principle of constrained layer damping. The
platter is a 34.5 mm thick piece of acrylic and runs
on an inverted bearing of Teflon and brass thrust plate
running on a steel shaft hardened to a 60 Rockwell hardness,
a lower cost version of the bearing used in the TNT
HR-X. The motor sits in it's own cut out in the mains
chassis, totally isolating the motor from the chassis
which holds the bearing and the arm, with the only connection
between the two being the Aries 2 belt. The motor itself
is a very high quality AC synchronous motor enclosed
in it's own steel housing. Sitting on 4 feet and without
suspension, the Scout is a very easy turntable to setup,
and is either supplied pre drilled for a Rega tonearm
or a JMW-9 tonearm.
For a very modest price the Scout turntable offers
a very solid platform for vinyl playback, with sophisticated
isolation of motor vibration from the main bearing and
arm, whilst the inverted bearing is incredibly quiet
in operation.
The Scout has received rave reviews around the World
and redefines your listening expectations at this price
point.
